Adoption Story #1: Duke, the Wonder Horse
Five years ago, Dale Harker Jr. adopted Duke, a mustang, at a BLM adoption event in California. Dale wanted to a horse for trail riding and camping. Duke looked like the perfect candidate.
Dale started Duke slowly using gentleness, pressure, and release. He worked to become the leader for his new horse. Dale says that Duke has taught him so much about working with horses and about himself.
Duke excels on the trail and is a leader for other horses he and Dale ride with. For Dale, Duke is a much trusted partner. They have been on long rides together and regularly go camping together. “Duke, the “wonder horse,” Dale says, “is much more than just a horse. Duke is my great friend.”
Adoption Story #2: Cobra, a Seasoned Competitor
American mustangs are selectively bred by nature for traits that optimize survival in the wild. Yet Cobra, an adopted Mustang, has been a serious contender in both the traditional and western dressage arenas.
In 2010, Marsha Harford-Sapp adopted Cobra at an Extreme Mustang Makeover event. Marsha says, “I didn’t have an agenda for Cobra’s training but it didn’t take long before his talent for dressage emerged."
Marsha has trained hundreds of horses, but she began working with mustangs as a path to self-discovery. “I had not been as close to a horse before Cobra. Mustangs help me improved my awareness and communication skills. Mustangs have made me a better trainer, a better instructor, a better role model, and a better person.”
“Cobra is a very seasoned competitor,” Marsha says. “Mustangs are perfect for western dressage. “It’s a super fit for them. Let’s get more mustangs in the show ring!”

DID YOU KNOW?
Adoptions of Wild Horses Are Down by 70%. You Can Help Reverse this Trend!
Previous Adopters Love Mustangs Because...
- Mustangs are a clean slate and bring a sense of adventure and personal satisfaction.
- Mustangs can provide an immensely meaningful experience. Many people recall helping their mustang transition from wild to best friend, and their “first touch” as peak life experiences.
- Mustangs are healthy and hearty. They have strong feet with thick hoof walls. They are easy keepers. They have stamina for the long ride.
- Mustangs are intelligent and have emotional honesty and wisdom. They are generous and forgiving by nature.
- Mustangs already understand good manners from growing up in a herd. They respect leadership and bond deeply with their human.
- Mustangs have an elevated sense of their environment. As a trail horse this can act as a “super trait” that benefits both rider and horse.
- Mustangs are a link to American history.
Need Another Reason?
With 45,000 previously wild horses now being manage off-range (both in grassland holding and short-term corrals), the Bureau of Land Management’s Wild Horse and Bureau program has reached critical mass. This program is fiscally unsustainable.
Therefore, the BLM has been advised by an citizen’s advisory board that euthanizing all 45,000 mustangs now managed off-range may be an option.
